Agenda - 02/26/2001 AdditionBoard Notes Woodburn School District Superintendent 965 N. Boones Ferry Road February 15, 2000 Woodburn, OR 97071 Dr. Jack D. Reeves, Student and staff recognition Three students from Lincoln Elementary School and six staff members from the district received recognition for their outstanding work during the 2000-01 school year. Lincoln Principal Irene Novichihin introduced third-grader Nancy Serrano- Jimenez, fourth-grader Paul Semerikov and fifth-grader Travis Klein to the Board and recognized each respectively for their outstanding effort in academics, citizenship and leadership. Superintendent Jack Reeves introduced Executive Director of Instructional Services Brenda Layton, Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction Bill tLhoades, Heritage Elementary School Principal Kathy Larson, and teachers Patti Browder, Lynne Koenig and April La Combe, recognizing their combined effort to represent the school district at the National Staff Development Council conference in December. While at the conference, the team gave two presentations about Woodburn's work with strategic planning and the Teaching for Mastery program. Reports Senior Keith Bryers reported on several January-February activities held at Woodburn High School. Bryer's presentation described many events and activities including Congresswoman Darlene Hooley's visit to WHS. While there, Hooley presented a Congressional Award to the student body for its collective work in making the crossing at Highway 214 safer. Bryers also reported that students and staff members at the high school donated 56 pints of blood to the American Red Cross at its annual blood drive. Finally, Bryers noted that the winter sports season was wrapping up with spring sports beginning next week. WHS International Baccalaureate and Leadership Program Coordinator Lynn King updated the Board on the high school's progress toward becoming an International Baccalaureate Program school. A team of IB representatives will visit the district the week of April 2 to meet with district administrators, students, parents and the Board. To prepare for that visit, King has been coordinating efforts to educate all staff members and potential students about the program and its offerings. Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction Bill Rhoades unveiled the initial product of the dropout prevention team. The team has met and worked together for three days, identifying the most prominent reasons that Woodburn students drop out and creating plans to keep those students in school. The team has set its purpose, beliefs and goals, but will have to meet again to confirm its proposed action plans before the program is put into place. Program and Student Evaluation Specialist Sherrilynn Rawson reviewed each of the state assessment tests that students in grades three, five, eight and 10 take on an annual basis. Of the five types of tests - Science multiple choice, Reading multiple choice, Math multiple choice, Math problem solving and Writing (by prompt) - students in all benchmark grades have taken the Writing and Math problem solving tests so far this year. Executive Director of Personnel and Administrative Services Walt Blomberg provided a preview of the upcoming curriculum- driven budgeting process, set to begin March 1. After describing the intent of the curriculum- driven budget, which is to base funding on goals from and involvement at all levels, Blomberg overviewed the basics of how budgets are put together from a technical standpoint. Public Forum No comments from the public were recorded at the Feb. 15, 2001 session of the WSD board of directors meeting. Board Action Items The Board unanimously approved a motion to allow Chairman Brett Meacham to attend an International Baccalaureate training conference this March. Based on the recommendation of District Technology Coordinator JoAnn Wolf, the Board approved a bid award to Wired or Wireless in the amount of $421,518 for the summer upgrade of the district's computer network backbone. Board members also approved the addition of 14 new classes to the high school's list of course offerings.
